I sit here and reflect upon a year that in global terms has provided some challenges and tragedies, yet on a personal level has ushered in renewal, creation, and self-exploration. I went on my own this year to build a personal brand that I am proud to look back upon. Launched in late January of this year, 2017 has been a year of growth for the By Scout brand, which blossomed from a blog to a podcast.
For my brand, and digital growth, I am eternally grateful. I have created a space where I can be a better version of myself – mentally and aesthetically. I have come out to all of you as living with bipolar disorder on my podcast and have drawn the curtains back on an aspect of my life I hold in the deepest contours of my soul. With that has come tremendous healing and one step closer to authenticity, something people have been digitally hungry for this year.
With all my successes and milestones this year (10k and then 20k and then a podcast!) and with all the brands I have had the pleasure of working with, I am still itching away at what the By Scout brand means – what it should look like to all of you. This will be an ever evolving concept and task that I look forward to curating in the future.
With that, I usher in 2018 with so many personal, career, and mental goals. I am such a fan of New Year Resolutions, but I never wait for the end of the year to make goal lists. Constantly tweaking and adding to my goal and resolution list is an ongoing practice that I think we should all be doing as a way to consistently better ourselves as individuals. Bettering oneself helps the bigger picture (which is struggling lately) and it is what I strive to do with each breathe.
It’s time to welcome 2018 in; Here are my resolutions and goals.
1. GET MARRIED
This one won’t be hard to accomplish seeing as our wedding is late January in Palm Springs. Sharing my wedding content with all of you over the past year has felt intimate and celebratory (Bridal Shower Recap, Bachelorette Party Recap, Engagement Party Recap, Bridesmaids Gifts Recap, Bridal Shower Dress List). I can’t wait to share my wedding and honeymoon with you all – but most importantly, I cannot wait to become Adam’s wife. It is something Adam and I have been looking forward to for a long time, as we have cultivated our relationship over the past five years. Nothing feels more perfect than getting married to him and truly becoming partners in life. He is my forever plan and will always be by my side.
2. GROW THE BY SCOUT BRAND
2017 was the year ‘By Scout’ was born. Since launching REVUE by scout in January and PODCAST by scout in July, the ‘By Scout’ brand officially has three parts: blog, podcast, and Instagram. I want 2018 to really be the year ‘By Scout’ grows in community, content, and partnerships. I have created a cultural destination filled with women empowerment, poetry, and mental health. I aim to continue to fine tune, curate, and create.
3. PUBLISH A BOOK
Have I mentioned I have been writing a book this year? I am 75% done with the first draft and am looking forward to finalizing it early 2018. This book will be another leg of the ‘By Scout’ brand and will recount my experiences living with bipolar disorder. This creative nonfiction piece of work will be my biggest accomplishment yet and I cannot wait to get it into the hands of all of you. Writing a book has been a dream of mine ever since I was a little girl and I hope 2018 has big plans for my work.
4. SAVE, SAVE, SAVE
Financial goals are always important to have. If you have a plan, you can set your financial foundation. This year I did not do as much saving as I would have liked. 2018 will be all about putting it away, building up that savings account, and placing myself in a good financial position for my future. It’s not the sexiest resolution but it is something we should all be thinking about and considering. Saving is empowering and freeing – two things we all strive for.
5. WORKOUT MORE
This one is always a resolution of mine. I am not a naturally active person. I never enjoyed sports or working out when I was a kid so when it comes to working out, it’s a struggle to get me through the front door. However, in preparation for my wedding, I have been sticking to a pretty consistent schedule of pilates, something I hope to bring with me throughout 2018. As long as I keep striving to get there, I’ll be in good shape.
6. TAKE CARE OF MY MENTAL HEALTH HOLISTICALLY
As you know, I came out as living with Bipolar Disorder on my podcast a few weeks back. Mental health care is a part of my daily routine but I always need a reminder to take care of myself. I am placing this on my resolution list because there is so much room for improvement, so many areas I can continue to work on to ensure my mental illness doesn’t take over. I am slowly but surely entering the space of holistic and spiritual health, an area I think can significantly help, and I can’t wait to share that migration with you. I am getting super into Reiki (read my spiritual awakening here) and am going to try acupuncture next. I just started reading a book on chakras and have started employing essential oils. The holistic sphere has so much to offer and I often times feel more comfortable with it than traditional psychiatry. This year, I plan to make holistic health one of my focuses.
With that, have a happy happy happy 2018. May this year be the year to look back upon with growth, health, happiness, and successes.
